The First Mark. En Plein Air Art in Cilento

Experience overview

This is an en plein air painting course in Cilento for those who have never painted — or stopped. Three days in Bosco di San Giovanni a Piro, overlooking the Gulf of Policastro, with Cesare Siboni: a classically trained painter, founder of the Accademia del Cilento, with works in collections across Italy, Japan and Belgium. Not a course to learn art — a course to start seeing it.

You will have an easel, a palette with five colours, and a master who demonstrates before letting you begin. You will learn how light changes colour, the difference between impasto painting and glazing, and how to build an initial sketch. The second day is entirely dedicated to the workshop; on the third day, Cesare takes you to Bosco: you will enter the home of Ortega, the Spanish painter from Picasso’s circle who was exiled here during Franco’s regime. You will see his painted papier-mâché works and the ceramic mural depicting the 1828 uprisings. You return home with your own canvas and a story that very few people know.

At Rifugio del Contadino everything is included: easels, paints, brushes, and local organic food. Groups are limited to a maximum of twelve participants.

Do I need painting experience to join? No. The course is designed for complete beginners — or those starting again. The only requirement is curiosity.

Program

The structure of the program is the promise of what you will experience: your own artwork, the fundamental techniques, and the visit to Bosco. The rhythm of the days is in the hands of the Master — in practice, timing may shift, moments may expand, the order may change, the group may guide the flow, and improvisation becomes part of the process when needed.

Day 1

5:00 PM — Introduction to the workshop and presentation of the working techniques.

Day 2

10:00 AM — Workshop: theory of drawing, colour, and composition. Live demonstration by Cesare.

1:00 PM — Shared lunch at the retreat.

Afternoon — Creation of your own artwork (landscape, still life, or figure painting) with guidance and support from the teacher.

6:00 PM — End of the workshop session.

Day 3

10:00 AM — Visit to the village of Bosco: the house and the Ortega Museum (painted papier-mâché works), and the ceramic mural by Peppino Mitarotonda based on a drawing by Ortega, dedicated to the 1828 uprisings.

1:00 PM — Return to the Rifugio for the farewell lunch and closing greetings.
